# Mercy

The words "mercy" and "merciful" are used to talk about helping people who need help. These words are also used to talk about forgiving a person instead of punishing the person who has done something wrong. A powerful person such as a king is called "merciful" when he is kind to people instead of harming them.

God is merciful to people (see: Exodus 34:6-7; Luke 1:50; Romans 11:32; 2 Corinthians 1:3; Ephesians 2:4). People are saved only by God’s mercy (see: Titus 3:5). Just as God is merciful to people, he wants people to be merciful to others (see: 2 Samuel 22:26; Matthew 5:7; Matthew 18:21-35; Luke 6:36).
