The authors of the New Testament wrote about Hades being “down.” They also wrote about heaven being “up” (see: Matthew 11:23; 14:19; Luke 10:15). Heaven is the place where the souls of people who believed in Jesus go after they die.

Hades is a place of waiting. People wait there until the day of judgment (see: Revelation 20:13). People who did not love God are tormented while they wait there (see: Luke 16:23). On the day of judgment, those who did not love God will be put in the Lake of Fire. Lake of Fire is another name for Hell. Hades will also be put in the Lake of Fire (see: Revelation 20:14-15).
