Abyss (Bottomless Pit)
The word “abyss” is used to talk about a very large, deep hole that has no bottom. It is also called a “bottomless pit” (see: Revelation 9:1-2, 11; 11:7; 17:8). In the Bible, demons are in the abyss and it is a place of punishment (see: Luke 8:30-31; Revelation 20:1-3).
In ancient times, people were afraid of the sea and thought of it as an abyss (see: Deuteronomy 30:13; Romans 10:7).
Tartarus (see: 2 Peter 2:4), Hades (see: Revelation 20:14), and hell (see: Matthew 5:29-30) are similar to the abyss.
