Jeremiah 49 General Notes

Structure and formatting

Some translations prefer to set apart quotations. The ULB and many other English translations indent the lines of 49:1-11, 14-27, 29-33, 37-39, which are extended quotations.

Jeremiah's prophesies about other nations conclude in this chapter. (See: rc://en/tw/dict/bible/kt/prophet)

Special concepts in this chapter

Covenant with Abraham

Ammon is destroyed because it drove the people of the tribe of Gad from their homeland. This is in line with the promises of the covenant Yahweh made with Abraham to curse those who curse Abraham's descendants. (See: rc://en/tw/dict/bible/kt/promise, rc://en/tw/dict/bible/kt/covenant and rc://en/tw/dict/bible/kt/curse)

Important figures of speech in this chapter

Rhetorical questions

There are many rhetorical questions in this chapter. The purpose of these rhetorical questions is to convict those Yahweh addresses. (See: rc://en/ta/man/translate/figs-rquestion)
