Hebrews 12 General Notes
Structure and formatting
Some translations set each line of poetry farther to the right than the rest of the text to make it easier to read. The ULB does this with the poetry in 12:5-6, which is quoted from the OT.
Special concepts in this chapter
Discipline
God disciplines his children in the same way parents discipline or correct their children. This imagery is used because discipline is out of love. Different cultures may have different standards of parental discipline, some of which may be unbiblical. God's discipline is the way he uses different circumstances to correct his children and to bring them to repentance. (See: rc://en/tw/dict/bible/kt/discipline, rc://en/tw/dict/bible/kt/repent and rc://en/ta/man/translate/figs-metaphor)
Important figures of speech in this chapter
Many different figures of speech are used. They are usually more common in poetic writings than in narrative, but the author uses them as a way to teach people.
