This is the law

AT: "These are the instructions" or "These are the directions"

for the one who kills another

"for a person who kills another person"

and who flees there

"and who escapes to one of these cities" or "and who runs to one of these cities"

to live

It is implied that the family of the man who died will try to get revenge and kill the man who accidentally killed his neighbor. AT: "so the family of the man who died does not kill him to get revenge" (See: rc://en/ta/man/translate/figs-explicit)

whoever kills his neighbor unawares

AT: "any person who kills another person by accident" or "any person who kills another person unintentionally"

did not previously hate him

Implies there was no cause for him killing his neighbor intentionally. AT: "did not hate his neighbor before"

as when a man goes into the forest...to cut wood

the head slips from the haft

The iron part of the ax comes off the handle.

strikes his neighbor so that he dies

The head of the ax hits the neighbor, killing him.
