22:7
\v 7 The king was angry, and he sent his soldiers and they killed those murderers and burned their city.
\v 7 The king was angry, and he sent his soldiers and they destroyed those murderers and burned their city.
Current ULB the same.
I suppose "destroyed" is ok, it just is not how we normally say it. We could change back to original and add "killed" to the header of one of the tw pages that includes g622. Maybe "death" since it already has were killed, was killed, are killed.
SQ. The ULG has "destroy" 559 times, and many of those cases have a human object. Is the problem simply the collocation of "destroy" with "people," or is it something special about this situation?
JH. No, there is nothing special about this situation. This issue comes up again in Matthew. It was something about the Jewish leaders planning to destroy Jesus. It just sounds strange to me. But, I'm ok with it if everyone else is.
SQ I'm fine with "kill" or "destroy" in Mat 22:7.
This comes up again in Issue 248, Matt 12:14. https://content.bibletranslationtools.org/WycliffeAssociates/en_ulb/issues/248, https://content.bibletranslationtools.org/WycliffeAssociates/en_ulb/issues/258 (Mat 27:20).
https://content.bibletranslationtools.org/WycliffeAssociates/en_ulb/issues/294
JH: It is also in Luke 13:33.
Henry, could you help us understand the change from "kill" to "destroy"?
Mattto Matt f5c2e49d From work on PDF Matt 21-23 01/03/2019 03:35 PMMy Two Cents:
I think it's hyperbole for "kill," though not marked as such in the tN.
SQ. That makes sense. I'd like to keep "destroy." It would be great if we could add TNs about the hyperbole, but even if we don't, I don't think people will have trouble understanding.
The ULB has 'destroy' about 100 times in the NT.
John, Tom, what do you think?
I am fine with "destroy." TomW
Since no change is called for, I'm closing the issue.
