\v 29 Have you never asked people who travel much?
\q2 Do you not believe their reports about what they have seen,
\q1
\v 30 that wicked people usually do not suffer at the time when there are great disasters;
\q2 that when God punishes people, someone rescues the wicked? that wicked people are the ones whom someone else rescues when God punishes people?
Issue: The second part of v.30 appears to have been rewritten to try and avoid the passive but both versions remain.
Cp original TFT of v.30:
30 that wicked people usually do not suffer at the time when there are great disasters;
that wicked people are the ones who are rescued when God is angry and punishes people [MTY]?
For reference, the ULB of v. 30 reads:
\v 29 Have you never asked traveling people?
\q Do you not know the evidence they can tell,
\v 30 that the wicked man is kept from the day of calamity,
\q and that he is led away from the day of wrath?
Suggest revising the UDB text and punctuation of vv. 29-30 to read:
\v 29 Have you never asked people who travel much?
\q2 Do you not believe their reports about what they have seen—
\q1
\v 30 that wicked people do not suffer at the time when there is a great disaster;
\q2 that someone rescues them when God punishes people?
(Note: The AT in the last tN for v.30 take a different approach, having God as the rescuing agent.)
Just running through this as a suggestion:
\v 29 Have you not asked people who travel on the roads,
\q2 and do you not believe their reports about what they have seen?
\q1
\v 30 They would tell you that wicked people do not always suffer when there is a great disaster,
\q2 and that they may be rescued on the day God punishes people.
Look this over.
Suggestions appreciated.
Tom
The salvation terms are difficult because they nearly always are passive ...
rescued, saved, redeemed, etc
I committed this to the text ... working on other things and didn't want to skip it.
The UDB of Job 21:29-30 now reads:
\v 29 Have you not asked people who travel on the roads,
\q2 and do you not believe their reports about what they have seen?
\q1
\v 30 They would tell you that wicked people do not always suffer when there is a great disaster,
\q2 and that they may be rescued on the day God punishes people.
Thankws Bob,
Tom
