In the New Testament, Jesus is called the "savior." Jesus saves people from being punished in hell forever. He did this by dying for people. Jesus was punished and died instead of people, who are all sinful and deserved to be punished. He also saves people by making it possible for them to stop sinning and to obey God (see: John 4:42; Acts 13:23; 2 Timothy 1:10; 2 Peter 1:11; 1 John 4:14).
