# Palace
In Bible times, a “palace” was a group of buildings, houses, and courtyards where a king lived. The kings family and servants also lived there. Palaces usually were very beautiful. They were built with stone and wood. The palace and the things in it were often covered with gold, silver, or ivory (see: 2 Samuel 5:11; 1 Kings 22:39).
Sometimes palaces were also used as places where people could go to be protected when enemies attacked (1 Kings 16:18).
#### More Information About This Topic
King Solomon built a palace in Jerusalem (see: 1 Kings 7:1-12). It took thirteen years to build the palace. It had several buildings and courts. It was built with cedar wood from Lebanon and with expensive stones.
The palaces in Jerusalem reminded people that God is the great king (see: Psalm 48:12-14). However, when God judged his people, he destroyed the palaces of Israel (see: Lamentations 2:5).
In New Testament times, the high priest lived in a palace (see: Matthew 26:3). The Jewish leaders brought Jesus to the courtyard of the high priest when they arrested Jesus (see: John 18:15).
