* **sit down** - or "lie down," depending on your local custom
* **(Now there was much grass in the place.)** - This was a comfortable place for the people to sit.
* **the people...the men...the people** - the crowd (See:[[en:ta:vol2:translate:figs_metonymy]])
* **five thousand in number** - While the crowd probably included women and children ([[:en:bible:notes:jhn:06:04]]), only the men were counted.
* **giving thanks** - Jesus is praying to God the Father and thanking him for the fish and the loaves.
* **he distributed** - Jesus broke the loaves and fish first and passed them to his disciples. The disciples then passed the bread and fish to the people.
