This is a rhetorical question James uses to exhort his audience. To speak in vain is to speak uselessly. Alternate translation: "There is a reason that scripture says ... jealous.'" (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/translate/figs-rquestion]])

# The Spirit he caused to live in us
Some versions, including the ULB and UDB, understand this as a reference to the Holy Spirit.
