## when they came ##
The word "they" includes the soldiers, the criminals, and Jesus.

"the soldiers crucified Jesus"

"the other criminal was crucified on a cross located at the left side of Jesus"
## forgive them ##
The word "them" refers to those who were crucifying Jesus.
## for they do not know what they are doing ##
"because they do not understand what they are doing." The soldiers did not understand that they were crucifying the Son of God. This can also be translated as "for they do not really know who they are doing this do."
## they cast lots ##
The soldiers participated in a type of gambling. It can be translated as "they gambled."
## dividing up his garments ##
"to decide who among the soldiers would take home each piece of Jesus' clothing"
